As we age, it’s natural for our hormones to shift out of balance. One of the most significant shifts is a drop in testosterone levels – and with that drop comes a multitude of symptoms that can make life feel more difficult than it needs to be.

Many men don’t realize that there are natural options available to help them regain their energy and vitality, beyond lifestyle changes that might not be enough to counteract the natural decline of testosterone levels. One effective option is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for men.

This type of therapy can naturally restore optimal hormone levels, leading to improved physical and mental health. Let's dive into more detail how BHRT for men works, who should get it, potential side effects, and why partnering with Pristine Hormones & Weight is a smart move.

Symptoms Of Low Testosterone

It's not just women who suffer from hot flashes, mood swings, and night sweats. As testosterone levels decline, men can also experience these types of symptoms as well as a decrease in sex drive, stamina, energy and motivation.

When your testosterone levels drop, men may also experience depression, anxiety and sleep problems along with hair loss, memory loss and erectile dysfunction. You may find yourself gaining weight and losing muscle mass.

Once you hit middle age, these symptoms are likely to occur with greater frequency and intensity.

How Do I Know If I Have Low Testosterone Levels?

Did you know there are convenient lab tests to determine whether or not you have "low T"?

The most common lab test for low testosterone is a testosterone blood test. This test measures the amount of testosterone in the blood. Other tests that may be used to diagnose low testosterone include a luteinizing hormone (LH) test and a follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) test.

These tests help to determine whether the low testosterone is caused by a problem with the pituitary gland or the testes. Additionally, a total testosterone test, free testosterone test, and bioavailable testosterone test might also be used for a complete diagnosis.

If your test results show that your testosterone level falls below 300 ng/dL and you are experiencing any of the common symptoms associated with low testosterone, you should explore appropriate lifestyle changes to naturally boost testosterone levels.

Given my expertise in treating hormone imbalances, the best first step is to schedule a free discovery to discuss your situation and help you get tested. I will help you understand what’s going on and come up with a comprehensive plan. Part of that plan might involve bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), possibly including hormone pellet therapy for men.

What Are the Risk Factors for Low Testosterone?

It's no secret that testosterone levels decrease as you age. However, men who have chronic illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity are at a higher risk of experiencing a more significant decline.

Stress and sedentary lifestyles can also be contributing factors.

If you're noticing that your sex drive is waning – or if you've been diagnosed with any of the above conditions – it's important to know what steps you can take to help keep your levels of testosterone up.

Why Should Men Consider BHRT?

BHRT is a treatment approach that uses bioidentical forms of testosterone (identical in molecular structure to your own endogenous testosterone) to optimize hormone levels so you can reclaim your vitality, energy levels and sex drive.

Because your body can't tell whether the hormones came from your testes or the pharmacy, BHRT is arguably safer than synthetic testosterone medications merely mimicking the function of testosterone.

There are many studies over the last 30 years that have shown BHRT as a safe and effective strategy for treating hormone imbalances – provided that appropriate hormone testing is used to individualize your dose to your specific needs.

Men who have used BHRT have experienced the following benefits:

  • Increase in energy & resilience
  • Improved mood & sleep
  • Boost in sexual drive & libido
  • Increase in muscular strength and body tone
  • Reduction in body fat
  • Decrease in anxiety

Safety

Your safety comes first. Testosterone therapy is considered when you have compatible symptoms and repeat low morning testosterone levels on lab tests. I also look for reversible causes (sleep apnea, certain medications, thyroid problems, significant weight gain) before treatment. Men planning pregnancy, or with prostate or male breast cancer, very high hematocrit, uncontrolled severe sleep apnea, recent heart attack or stroke, uncontrolled heart failure, or concerning prostate findings generally should not start testosterone. We’ll coordinate with your prescribing clinician to keep care aligned.

If BHRT is appropriate, I’ll choose a form that fits your goals (usually FDA-approved options first, like gels/patches or injections). Compounded products may be used when clinically necessary but don’t have the same consistency or oversight as approved therapies. On treatment, I monitor symptoms, blood counts (hematocrit), PSA/prostate health when appropriate, blood pressure, lipids, and testosterone levels. Seek urgent care for chest pain, trouble breathing, one-sided weakness, sudden severe headache, vision changes, or leg swelling. Testosterone can lower sperm counts – if fertility is a goal now or soon, I’ll discuss alternatives.

Recent FDA updates removed prior language suggesting increased major cardiovascular events in appropriately indicated use, but added a blood-pressure warning, so regular BP checks are part of care.

FAQs

Do I qualify if I just feel “off”?

Symptoms matter, but guidelines call for two low morning testosterone levels plus symptoms before starting therapy. I also check for causes I can fix first.

What does “bioidentical” mean for men?

“Bioidentical” refers to testosterone that matches your body’s molecule. Many FDA-approved products contain bioidentical testosterone. Compounded versions exist but may have variable dosing; I prefer approved options when possible.

Gels, injections, or pellets – how do I choose?

Gels/patches give steady levels and easy dose changes; injections are flexible and cost-effective but can cause peaks/troughs if not scheduled well; pellets last months but are usually compounded and can’t be quickly adjusted. We’ll match the method to your history and goals.

Will testosterone affect fertility?

Yes – testosterone can suppress sperm production. If you want children now or soon, we’ll consider non-testosterone strategies.

How quickly will I feel better?

Many men notice changes in energy, libido, and mood over several weeks; body-composition changes build over 8–12 weeks and keep improving with sleep, nutrition, and strength training.

How often is follow-up?

Typically at 3 months after starting or changing dose, then every 6–12 months once stable, with labs and blood pressure checks

Do you offer telehealth?

Telehealth is available after your first in-person visit at Pristine Hormones & Weight.

What happens in the discovery call?

I'll review your goals and history and outline smart first steps. I can go over specific tests, treatments, and services as part of that call.
